Zuanelli has officially started the construction of the new Z36, designed by Felci Yacht Design.

In the Zuanelli shipyard, the molds for the new jewel designed by Felci Yacht Design are being created. As planned, they will be completed by the end of December, and with the new year, the construction of the first specimen of this innovative boat will begin.

A product thought, designed, and built with passion, imagined and experienced in every detail. Capable of gathering all the experience and concreteness of two realities, the Zuanelli Shipyard and Felci Yacht Design, which have distinguished themselves so far for the quality and seriousness of their work.

The Zuanelli 36 is born with different purposes.

The first is to give the opportunity to young sailors to approach the world of sailing and cruising starting on the right foot. This desire, born from the passion of Zuanelli and Felci, is especially reflected in the SPORT configuration of the Z36.

In this setup, all choices are dedicated to maximum functionality and efficiency, stemming from the desire to keep costs as low as possible for what we could define as an “entry level.” A configuration that does not require particular options to be able to cast off and start enjoying the adventure of offshore sailing.

The second purpose is to allow a mature sailor, who wants to experience the sea in all its aspects, who loves to sail safely and with excellent performance, to find themselves on a vessel designed and planned in every detail to make their life on board and navigation better.

From this purpose arises the GRAN TURISMO configuration, in which the extreme functionality of all choices is, where still possible, enhanced. For example, the addition of primary winches, the possibility of motorizing them, and the introduction of a steering system with the now classic double wheel.

This setup of the new Zuanelli also takes into account some formal concessions and choices that have important aesthetic values. For example, the teak deck (real or synthetic), the flush hatches of the highest quality, and some non-essential but useful system elements to increase onboard and navigation comfort.

The third purpose arises from the desire to respond to the growing demand for vessels dedicated to exploration, designed for long-range offshore sailing, capable of ensuring long stays on board. Thus, the zuanelli EXPLORER configuration is born, which from the very beginning of the project provides a coherent, functional, and aesthetically very interesting response to the multitude of needs that an “Explorer” sailor will face. For example, adequate protection of the cockpit from both the elements and the sun, the possibility of installing large solar panels, the ease of hoisting the tender without having to disassemble the engine, and many others.

Zuanelli 36 SPORT, the starting point for those approaching the Z36, offers everything necessary for sailing and cruising, essential, efficient, and modular, it can also be customized at a later time.

Zuanelli 36 GRAN TURISMO, designed for Mediterranean cruising use, equipped with a double steering wheel, teak deck, and a large swim platform at the stern.

Zuanelli 36 EXPLORER, more than any other, summarizes the potential of this new project. Designed for long voyages, it is equipped with all the elements that facilitate life on board. Starting from a robust roll bar for the mainsail sheet, an efficient cockpit cover, and increased external storage.

The design philosophy that accompanies all three models is based on “Functionality” as an absolute priority.

The hull, characterized by rather ample volumes, thanks to an important but not extreme maximum beam, with very taut lines and great stability of shape, is born to offer not only absolute performance but also high sailing comfort. The appendages and sail plan are also configured to always offer maximum control and ease of handling. The fin, with a maximum draft of 2 meters, made of steel with a lead bulb and assembled with a tested system of a plate and oversized shrouds, offers great lateral stability and optimal lift. The construction of the Z36, made from a female mold in epoxy resin infusion and fiberglass with localized carbon fiber reinforcements, is among the most robust, durable, and lightweight that can be created with current technologies. The base panel of the hull and deck, made of sandwich, offers rigidity and insulation, as well as great stiffness.

Great attention is also given to the choice of components for the systems. Here too, the foundation is simplification: “fewer things, fewer potential failures, and less maintenance.” The spirit of these wise words is embraced and always kept in mind during the design and realization of the systems themselves.

In this, the great experience of the shipyard has been of fundamental importance. Architecturally, the interiors are divided simply and designed with efficiency and elegance. The furniture, made with lightweight materials, is easily removable for maintenance or replacement. In the SPORT version, there are two cabins, both spacious with double beds, with a single large bathroom and spacious shower. The kitchen, of dimensions usually found only on much larger vessels, with double refrigerator and many storage options, is located on the left in a traditional position.

The chart table faces aft, and a technical area with an electrical panel and navigation instruments is located in the center of the boat, the control point for all necessary functions for navigation and for managing the systems. A large storage area is also provided at the stern, with easy access from both the cockpit and the bathroom, serving to store everything necessary for great autonomy. The deck equipment, the result of an optimization process, includes in the SPORT version, 4 winches, electrifiable, two dedicated to halyards and two to sheets, positioned within reach of the helmsman. The mainsail track is also provided at the bottom of the cockpit, and as an option, it is possible to add two primary winches to separate the functions of managing the mainsail and the headsails.

Not common on a 36-footer is also the separate, watertight sail locker, with access from the deck via a dedicated hatch. This allows for orderly storage of the jib and code zero when not on the shore and creates an additional watertight area that separates the center of the boat from the extreme bow.

The transom is manually operable, and the stern garage is accessible from the watertight hatch located at the bottom of the cockpit, allowing it to be used as additional storage and ensuring a watertight area that separates the steering gear from the rest of the vessel.

Among the options, it is also possible to place a robust steel roll-bar with the mainsail track incorporated, to keep the cockpit free from the sheet, and then the stern arch, very useful for hoisting the tender during short-range movements, positioning solar panels, providing space for various antennas, and supporting an innovative rollable cockpit cover.

To protect the cockpit, at the bow, an innovative openable carbon and plexiglass dome is being studied as an alternative to the traditional tube-canvas dodger. It is designed as a true windshield, easily adjustable to three levels to provide robust protection during the most challenging navigations, but also the possibility of direct air during the hottest periods or light winds.

Marinas are intensifying their activities from simple docks where small pleasure boats find their berths, to multidisciplinary locations for nautical lifestyle experiences. โ€œMarinas must treat visitors like hotel guests,โ€ said Alberto Galassi, CEO of the Ferretti Group at the Icomia World Marinas Conference. The digitalization of services, the need for berths for larger yachts, and the standardization of online services are the challenges for marina operators. Market research predicts a positive decade ahead if marinas can provide the comprehensive experience that boat owners should desire.

Both the U.S. market research agency โ€œGrowth Market Reportsโ€ and the UKโ€™s โ€œMarket Research Futureโ€ have studied the global marine industry this year and calculated that this sector can grow in the next decade. Their exact findings vary somewhat, but both research organizations concluded that the global marina market currently represents an annual revenue of about $20 billion. They agree that this figure could increase to around $30 billion in the coming decade.

Urban Escapes

Researchers identify trends and challenges for the sector: with further increases in global urbanization combined with (in the first world and the wealthy populations of emerging and developing countries) greater spending power, there is demand for leisure activities on and by the water. Escaping from busy metropolitan areas, boaters and yachts will need maintenance and repair services at the marina, as bringing the boat home to cities is often not an option. Coming to their boats, the urban boating community wants to relax and enjoy the company of fellow boaters. Marinas are already transforming from docking facilities for boats to navigation hubs with carefree boat maintenance services alongside hospitality services such as restaurants, playgrounds, supermarkets for onboard supplies, and chandlers.

Ports to Resorts

Small-scale marinas in urban areas have little room for expansion, and medium-sized marinas may not have growth potential. Growth opportunities, researchers from the UK emphasize, lie with larger marinas. There, spas can be added to the luxury experience. More restaurants can offer a wider choice. Nautical festivals can attract non-boating audiences and entertain marina guests. These large marinas can also find space to accommodate larger yachts. U.S. researchers identify a growing demand for eco-friendly recreation. Owners looking for a place to dock their boat may feel better at home in a marina that has invested in renewable energy resources, offers environmentally friendly products and services, and values the natural environmentโ€”after all, enjoying clean waters is what leisure sailors want to do.

Concentration

A third trend not specifically identified by research firms is the rapid consolidation of marinas into conglomerates. Twenty to fifteen years ago, most marinas were local businesses owned by port masters who were present at the marina every day themselves. Today, marinas with their often extensive properties and incorporated companies are increasingly being taken over by marina groups such as IGY Marinas, Yacht Haven Group, Premier Marinas, or Safe Harbor Marinas. The advantage of belonging to a larger group is the availability of funds to invest in new facilities and services. The downside is that decisions are made at the conglomerate’s headquarters based on figures and profit, while the people running the business no longer know the individual berth holder.

Standards

In mid-October, delegates from marinas and marina conglomerates from around the world gathered in Venice, Italy, for the Icomia World Marinas Conference. Icomia President Frank Hugelmeyer called for cooperation. โ€œThe competition is not ourselves,โ€ he proclaimed in the opening speech, setting water and sea-based recreation apart from the otherโ€”landโ€”form of leisure. Hugelmeyer urged marina professionals to seek standards for online services. For people on boats, booking a berth online can be simplified if all marinas use the same booking systems or at least compatible ones. The need to download a new app on their smartphone at every marina certainly does not help them adapt to digital services.

Demanding Owners

Transformation from boat parking lots to hubs of nautical experience at sea, responding to customer demand, Oliver Dรถrschuk, CEO of the marina automation software company D-Marin argues. His companyโ€™s study on customer experience in Mediterranean marinas revealed increasingly demanding customers. From the peak demand for new and used boats during the COVID pandemic, new boat sales have declined. The only segment in the boat building market that has grown is superyachts. Customers who own yachts longer than 24 meters tend to be more demanding than skippers of small and medium-sized yachts. Marinas today have empty berths at docks for small boats and waiting lists for large yacht slips. Media from professional marina operators report dozens of special marina plans for superyachts or ongoing constructions currently.

Including the Young

Having the money to buy a yacht over 24 meters usually happens to boaters later in life. Even buying a new or moderately sized used yacht is something that many twenty-somethings cannot afford. Bryan Redmond, CEO of Suntex marinas, thinks about the future of the industry in more than a decade and reflects on how to bring young people into marinas and boating. He argues that sailing clubs and shared ownership programs should be actively engaged by marina operators. Active sailing and water recreation, made possible at affordable costs, he describes as โ€œgateways to boatingโ€: โ€œCreating emotional and experience-driven connections is key to keeping newcomers engaged.โ€

Kim Hollamby asks Slovenian producer LXNAV why they decided to think differently when creating the E360 display, winner of the DAME Design Awards, and to understand how it was made.

The E360 is a 4-inch (102mm) round multifunction touchscreen display that captured the imagination of the DAME Design Awards jury from the very beginning of the evaluation process. It looked different, worked well without a glitch, and felt good. While there were several close contenders, there was something special about LXNAV’s attention to detail that set it apart.
This product features the ability to display a wide range of NMEA 2000 data, including the latest electrical PGNs (Parameter Group Numbers). It comes with preloaded OpenSeaMap charts, offers Navionics compatibility via SD card, and has integrated Fusion music control. The E360 is waterproof to IPX6 and includes built-in Wi-Fi and GPS. It offers high levels of user customization for displayed data and alert thresholds. The DAME Design Awards jury praised its compact and cohesive design, which is easily integrated, paired with an intuitive user interface, a wide range of functions, and a responsive screen.
But why create a round multifunction display in the first place? At first glance, it is not the simplest form factor to work with. To understand more, it helps to look at the company’s history.

LXNAV was founded in 2009 to design and produce high-tech avionics for gliders and light sport aircraft. It quickly made a name for itself in aviation and today commands a significant majority of the glider market, having manufactured over 10,000 instruments.
Around 2016, LXNAV co-founders, CEO Erazem Poล‚utnik and CTO Uroลก Kraลกovic, decided to diversify. Both were boat owners and had formed opinions on what they would like to see in the next generation of marine electronic products. The opportunity to create a modern ecological system through the adoption of the NMEA 2000 communication protocol was the catalyst. Their belief was that they could bring the high-quality design and manufacturing standards of LXNAV, which are mandatory within aviation applications, and apply them to the marine electronics sector.
In the years since the company launched its E-series rectangular chart plotters in 5-inch, 7-inch, and 9-inch sizes using a real estate-coded user interface designed to mimic smartphone operation. These products leveraged the company’s aviation experience and included programming to generate smart alerts that automatically switched the screen to the highest priority information, such as low depth, low fuel, or voltage drop, based on user-defined parameters.
The company also developed an outlier – a 4.5-inch hybrid circular instrument that combined an analog needle for engine RPM with a 3.5-inch multifunction LCD screen. The E350 used a jog dial for control and found application aboard some Sunseeker models.
LXNAV subsequently added a range of NMEA 2000 compatible sensors and converters that are easily configurable to provide engine, GPS, fluid level, battery, and atmospheric data. These use QR codes that allow configuration from smartphones via Wi-Fi. The busy nearby Croatian charter market also pushed the company to develop a tracking solution for the plug and play with means to communicate alarms back to base.

The logic for the birth of the E360 partly stemmed from LXNAV realizing how it could iteratively improve the E350 to be much more versatile and easier to read. Perhaps more importantly, it was understood that, as a relatively unknown small business, it was difficult to make its rectangular form factor chart plotters stand out against market leaders. If done well, a round multifunction touchscreen would attract attention and echo classically oriented design themes in vogue, such as the iconic circular instrument of the ‘new’ Mini from BMW.
The sales and marketing leader for LXNAV Marine, Franck Blanchard, explains: โ€œThe E350 was a beautiful device, but we thought it would be nice to have a larger map chart on the screen and control the display with a touchscreen. It took us over a year to design and prepare the E360 for launch. First, we tested different types of displays before choosing the one that provided the fastest and most reliable response. The operating software is the same used on our rectangular chart plotters, just adapted for the different screen shape, making it familiar for users who use more than one type of screen.
โ€œThe NMEA 2000 connected racing wheel is no longer essential as it was on the E350. But it is an option available to suit some boats where the dashboard is at a long distance, as well as for easy operation when the boat is moving very dynamically. Itโ€™s a system that will also be familiar to car drivers and those who may not be experienced boat users.โ€
In terms of impact, Blanchard hoped that the E360 would be recognized as something different at Metstrade and would receive a nomination for the DAME Design Awards. Both he and CEO Erazem Poล‚utnik were completely surprised when they were first announced as category winners and then overall winners. Proof that their design goals were significantly exceeded.

Today, LXNAV employs about 35 people in Celje, Slovenia. They work across the glider and marine product ranges. About half are focused on research and development, with the balance on production and administration.
In terms of overall impact and application, LXNAV could see how the E360 would sit well at the helm of classic-style boats, but Blanchard also emphasizes that the way the internal team is structured means they can quickly adapt their product software to specific requirements. He sits in the middle of the team between developers and production staff and can discuss customer needs as soon as they become known.

In terms of next steps, LXNAV is exploring concepts to launch a range of smart 2-inch (50mm) round gauges, opening many options for retrofit sales and working with OEMs. โ€œWe have had feedback that people would like to replace analog dials,โ€ explains Blanchard. โ€œAn important reason we have attended Metstrade since we launched into the marine market is to talk to customers and get their feedback. The show is a great place for us: we really enjoy working with boat builders and engine manufacturers, and we already have several established collaborations with companies including Vetus and Rim Drive Technology.
โ€œWe may be a small business, but we have put our experience in the marine sector and applied the same high standard in terms of design and production of products. Our size is also a strength, allowing us to react quickly and adapt to the multiple needs of our customers today.โ€

Milano confirms its status as the capital of innovation and international business by hosting an unprecedented event for the maritime sector: SEAQUIP โ€“ Mediterranean Yacht and Marine Equipment Trade Fair. Scheduled from March 4 to 6, 2026 at the Fiera Milano Rho venue, the event is set to become the new reference point for the nautical components and accessories supply chain.

An innovative format: boats are not the protagonists

Unlike traditional boat shows, SEAQUIP reverses the perspective. Here, large yachts are not on display; instead, they are the recipients of the technologies showcased. The event is exclusively B2B (Business to Business), designed to bring together component manufacturers, designers, naval architects, and leading shipyards from around the world.

The numbers and the key players

Organized by the Easyfairs Italia group, the fair has already recorded extraordinary success even before the official opening:

  • Exhibitors: Over 130 confirmed companies, including industry giants such as Besenzoni, HP Watermakers, Mapei, Osculati, Raymarine, and Vetus.
  • Support from Shipyards: Major names like Gruppo Azimut|Benetti, Fincantieri, Bellini Nautica, and Cantieri di Pisa are participating as official supporters, ensuring the presence of key international buyers.
  • Institutional Sponsorships: The event enjoys support from ITA (Italian Trade Agency), Assonautica, and UCIF, highlighting the strategic importance of “Made in Italy” in the components sector.

What to expect at SEAQUIP 2026

The exhibition covers the entire value chain of boat construction, divided into thematic areas:

  1. Sustainability and Propulsion: Focus on low-emission engines, recyclable materials (such as the FIB3R project for fiberglass recovery), and green technologies.
  2. Technology and AI: Cutting-edge navigation software and integration of artificial intelligence for onboard management.
  3. Luxury Interior: High-quality materials and design solutions for superyacht interiors.
  4. Refitting: A rapidly growing sector that will find technical solutions for modernizing existing vessels in Milan.

Why Milan?

The choice of Milan is not random. The city is the economic center of Italy and offers excellent logistics for European operators. Taking place in early spring, SEAQUIP fits into a strategic moment in the nautical calendar, allowing shipyards to plan technical purchases before the summer season.
