VMG 53: the new standard for high-performance offshore sailing

The world of offshore sailing is preparing to welcome a project destined to rewrite the very concept of fast cruising. It is called VMG 53 and it is a 53-foot trimaran designed to combine hydrodynamic efficiency and the performance typical of modern trimarans with ample internal volumes, high livability, and the autonomy necessary to undertake long cruising transfers, according to the highest standards of the premium segment.

Currently under construction, the VMG 53 marks the official debut on the international nautical scene of the newly established shipyard VMG and is born with an ambitious vision: to make advanced multihull technology accessible to series production, without compromising on performance, safety, and quality of life on board.

VMG 53: the genesis

The idea of the VMG 53 takes shape in a context that is anything but theoretical: an offshore regatta off the New England coast, where the co-founders Michael Schwartz and Karl Reed first met as members of the same crew. After a particularly challenging crossing, the two began to discuss what the ideal yacht could be, sharing the belief that a sailor should not have to choose between speed, comfort, safety, and ease of handling.

That conversation on the open sea soon turned into a concrete challenge: was it possible to turn that vision into a real boat? To answer this question, Schwartz and Reed decided to involve some of the best professionals in the world in the fields of design, engineering, and shipbuilding. Three years ago, in Cape Town, South Africa, a project began to take shape that has progressively evolved into the current VMG 53, now in advanced stages of construction.

An ambitious philosophy

The shipyard is based in New York and presents itself as an international reality supported by an international team of sailors, designers, and nautical industry professionals. The very name of the brand, “Velocity Made Good,” refers to a technical concept in sailing: the ability to translate speed into real progress towards the destination.

A philosophy that also becomes a statement of intent: to optimize every design choice to achieve the maximum result in terms of efficiency, performance, and real use at sea.

To turn this vision into reality, VMG has chosen to collaborate with some of the most authoritative names in the international nautical scene, such as the renowned French studio VPLP Design for the naval design of the VMG 53, Christophe Chedal Anglay for the interior design, and Thorne Yacht Design for the engineering and technical development of the vessel.

Construction is underway at Evolution Marine Manufacturing in Cape Town, a specialist in the production of advanced composite hulls.

VMG 53: racing performance, yacht comfort

The VMG 53 is designed to offer the sensations of a true oceanic trimaran in terms of speed and efficiency, but with a level of comfort consistent with a modern luxury yacht.

Light lines, great hydrodynamic efficiency, and an offshore-oriented setup combine with internal spaces designed for long-range cruising.

The goal is not just to go faster, but to make sailing sustainable and comfortable even over long distances, without sacrificing ease of handling.

“From the beginning, our goal has been to create the boat that we ourselves would want to own – said Michael Schwartz – We believe we have the opportunity to combine world-class design, real offshore sailing capabilities, and authentic sailing performance in a way that has never been achieved before on a production trimaran. With the VMG 53 and the models that will follow, we want to make the most advanced technologies available today in the world of trimarans accessible to a wider audience.”

The first unit is expected to debut officially in January 2027, marking VMG’s entry into a segment where innovation, performance, and comfort finally seek a real balance.
